“Cross-cultural research” for the first-grade students —Overseas school excursion to Taiwan—

From 16th to 20th March, our first-grade students went on an overseas school excursion to Taiwan.

On 18th March, our students and students from National Taiwan Normal University High School held small-group discussion on cross-cultural comparison between Taiwan and Japan. On 19th March, each group of our students was supported by students from National Taiwan Normal University and toured various locations in Taipei together, in order to explore each of the themes they are interested in. Our students gained many valuable experiences in their group activities.



Field trip programs with students from National Taiwan Normal University

Our students took part in field trip programs with students from National Taiwan Normal University.

1. Sightseeing tour of Kanazawa city center
On the afternoon of 30th January, our students and students from Kanazawa University guided a group of students from National Taiwan Normal University around central Kanazawa.
They visited 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Kenroku-en (Six Attributes Garden), The Kanazawa Shrine, and Kanazawa Castle Park. Students cultivated cultural exchanges through the sightseeing tour of historic sites in Kanazawa city center. 2 students from our high school attended this tour.

2. Cultural experience of Japan
On the afternoon of 6th February, from 13:30 to 17:00, our students and students from Taiwan attended a Japanese confection making workshop at Kanko Bussankan Sightseeing and Product Center and also learned how to apply gold leaf at Higashi-Chaya District. They deepened mutual understanding of each other’s cultures through discussion about traditional cultures and crafts. 6 students from our high school attended this activity.

3. Field trip to Shirakawa-go
On 11th February, our students and students from Kanazawa University took students from Taiwan on the field trip to Shirakawa-go. They visited historic villages and the Gassho-style houses of Shirakawa-go, which are designated as National Important Cultural Properties and registered as a World Heritage Site. Students also enjoyed luncheon together. 11 students from our high school attended this trip.



The visiting student program between National Taiwan Normal University and Kanazawa University High School

The visiting student program between National Taiwan Normal University and Kanazawa University High School was held at our high school from 25th to 29th of January, as part of the activities of our research project ”Cross-cultural research”. We welcomed Mr. Graham Todd and five students from National Taiwan Normal University.

Taiwan HourⅠ: On 26th January, Mr. Graham Todd gave lessons entitled “Cross Cultural Research” to each class of our first-grade students. Based on questionnaire survey about differences in values between university students in Taiwan and in Japan, all lessons were conducted in English. Active learning methods were also applied to these lessons.

Taiwan Hour Ⅱ and Ⅲ:On 28th and 29th January, our first-grade students made English presentations on results of cross-cultural survey between Taiwan and Japan. Their surveys were conducted in the context of group work for “cross-cultural research” project. All presentations were conducted in English, and followed by question and answer session and discussion with university students from Taiwan.



The 2nd SGH Conference and the 25th Seminar on Upper Secondary Education

On 21st November, the 2nd SGH Conference and the 25th Seminar on Upper Secondary Education were held at Kanazawa university high school.

Open classes of Japanese Literature, Civics, Geography and History, and science started at 10 a.m. and were followed by review sessions.
In Japanese Literature class, our students had an exercise in parallel reading of Kokoro by Natsume Soseki.
They took part in active learning exercises entitled “Does my body belong to myself only?” in civics class, and “Immigrants, citizens, and the nation” in Geography and History class.
In science class, students presented the findings of their studies on biology.

In the afternoon, representatives of first-grade classes made presentations on their “regional studies” at 12:45 p.m.
Second-grade students took part in a mock international conference as representatives of 14 countries, and they discussed policies to sustain the world in 2050.

We gave a presentation on our school’s overall effort in SGH program at 14:50 p.m., in the presence of participants from different senior high schools and universities. The educational expert, Kanae Nishioka, Ph.D, Associate Professor at Kyoto University closed the convention with recommendations and a lecture on performance assessment.




Presentations of “Approaches to regional challenges”

On September 25, September 26 and October 3, each class of our first-grade students made presentations of “Approaches to regional challenges”.  

”Approaches to regional challenges” aim to suggest some approaches to discovering how to make people and certain regions happier. Students acted together in groups of three to six, and each group picked their own themes to work for. They began with research under the theme and then proceeded to suggest solutions.

Each group made a Power Point presentation in 20 minutes or less.
